Metadata is often described as 'data about data'.

It generally includes a definition of a data field in business language, details about the storage of the field (data type, length, allowing nulls), any list of valid data or codes that can fill the field, the origin of the data, the means of capture of the data, any data transformations, any validation criteria, the data lineage (where it originates, goes, and ends up), etc.

Data technicians use metadata in ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) creation, report design, data warehouse design.

Business users use metadata to understand the data that they see in reports or that is presented to them by a business intelligence tool or dashboard symbol.

Each time an IT person needs to find this type of information, it takes about 1 hour. When a business goes through the effort of creating and maintaining a metadata repository, the information is immediately available.
