Leverage Struts, Spring, Hibernate, and Axis Often, a J2EE Web application framework—Struts, for example—doesn't address the Web-tier object references between Action/servlet and other layers, such as a plain old Java object (POJO) business manager, Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), Web services, and a data access object (DAO), or between a DAO and JDBC (Java Database Connectivity) stored procedures. Thus, Java developers end up with messy code in the Web tier Action/servlet. This article describes in detail the steps for developing a custom framework that addresses those issues.

» complete change

_this list is currently under construction. Please add your questions about [[SASH]]:_

_*What is SASH?*_

SourceLabs SASH for Java is a distribution of lightweight enterprise app frameworks that deploy on a J2EE application server or other Java container. J2EE application standards define system services like transactions, security, messaging, etc. Commercial vendors have focused on providing the best qualities of service for these system services, but have not addressed application frameworks. SASH combines the best-of-breed frameworks and their dependencies into a certified distribution.

_*Where do I get SASH?*_

You can obtain SASH from the "SourceLabs distribution site":http://dist.sourcelabs.com/sash. You'll probably want to read the "Getting Started guide":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_gettingstarted guide": http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_gettingstarted first

_*What are the version numbers of each of the components of SASH?*_

The SASH 1.1 release is comprised of

* Struts 1.2.7

* Axis 1.3

* Spring 1.2.6

* Hibernate 3.0.5

For the most recent information visit [[SourceLabs]].

_*Where can I find installation instructions for SASH?*_

Installation instructions, release notes, and other documentation is referenced "here":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_gettingstarted.

_*Does SASH have any dependencies that are not packaged with it?*_

SASH is distributed with the open source dependencies on which it depends. You'll need a J2SE environment and a container, like a J2EE 1.4 application server. If you're not using a J2EE 1.4 applications server, you may need to download additional specification JARs from Sun. See "Specification JAR Dependencies":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_specjars for more details.

_*What application servers have been tested with SASH?*_

* Oracle OAS 10g

* WebLogic 8.1

* WebSphere 6

* Tomcat 5.5

_*What do I need to know in order to deploy the SASH test applications on my application server?*_

Check the "deployment notes":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_deployment from SourceLabs for specifics.

_*How do I report problems with SASH?*_

Contact support@sourcelabs.com

_*I have a question that isn't listed here. What should I do?*_

SWiK is a wiki that anyone can edit. Your best bet is to just add the question directly to the FAQ. SourceLabs and the community are actively tracking the SASH pages on SWiK.

_*What application server/database do you recommend for use with SASH?*_

With SASH you have your choice of application server and database. SourceLabs provides commercial support for SASH on Oracle app server, WebLogic, Websphere and Tomcat with an Oracle database.

_*What if I only want to use some of the projects in SASH?*_

You can use whatever parts of SASH that your application needs. SASH is structured to provide the components and dependencies for only the components that you want. For one way of how to integrate SASH into your application, have a look at "SASH integration using Ant":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_withant.

_*How are the bits in your distribution different from what I would get from the individual projects?*_

[[SourceLabs]] has built SASH from soup to nuts, resolving version conflicts, circular dependencies, etc. Also, SASH has integrated patches to the base versions to provide the most dependable distribution. For more information on the patches applied to each components have a look at the "dashboards":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=2&page=software&sub=dashboard_struts.

_*Does SASH come with Maven2? Do I need to use Maven2 to use SASH?*_

[[SourceLabs]] provides a Maven 2 task that you can use with Ant. Though the SASH repository is built on Maven 2, you can use multiple methods (binary image, ant, Maven2) of integrating SASH into your build processes. The "Getting Started Guide":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_gettingstarted has more details.

_*What are your future plans for SASH?*_

[[SourceLabs]] provides the most dependable distribution of open source Java frameworks. As open source Java evolves, you can be assured that the SASH distribution will include the frameworks and libraries you need for your applications.

_*How do I develop applications with SASH?*_

Check some of the great project pages [[Struts]], [[Axis]], [[Spring]] and [[Hibernate]] for launching points to the aggregated documentation for each specific framework.

_*How do I use SASH with my favorite IDE - i.e. eclipse, IntelliJ, etc...?*_

SASH supports Ant builds with a Maven2 task. See "SASH integration using Ant":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_withant.

_*How do I use SASH with applications that have already been written or deployed?*_

SASH libraries need to be included as part of your build process. You'd need to rebuild and deploy to use the distribution.

_*What versions of Java are supported by SASH?*_

SASH 1.1 was built with J2SE 1.4.2. and tested on 1.4.2 and J2SE 5. [[SourceLabs]] provides commercial support for SASH with these versions of the Java runtime.

_*What other components are packaged with the SASH stack?*_

SASH bundles Struts, Axis, Spring, Hibernate and their required libraries and some optional libraries. Have a look at the "SASH 1.1 Release Notes":http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_relnotes for more specifics.

_*What does "Certified" mean in this context?*_

You'll probably want to read the "Getting Started guide": Started" guide: http://www.sourcelabs.com/?sidemenu=4&page=software&sub=sash_gettingstarted first

_*What are the version numbers of each of the components of SASH?*_

The SASH 1.1 release is comprised of

* Struts 1.2.7

* Axis 1.3

* Spring 1.2.6

* Oracle OAS 10g

* WebLogic 8.1

* WebSphere 6

* Tomcat 5.5
