Java is a object-oriented [[programming language]] created by [[Sun|Sun Microsystems]]. It is compiled to an intermediate language called 'byte code' that is then interpreted. The interpreted nature allows compiled Java programs to run on different platforms, including [[FreeBSD]], [[Solaris]], [[Linux]], [[Windows]], [[OSX|MacOS]] and a lot of other [[os|operating systems]].

An older version of the language can also be compiled to native code by the gcj compiler.
Java compilers are produced by Sun, IBM and the open source community.
Due to its intermediate language nature and abstraction from native calls, Java has attracted criticism as being slower than native compiled code like [[C++ ]]. Additionally Java code must be run in a [[JVM|Java Virtual Machine]], which imposes an overhead. The introduction of various just-in-time compilers has negated his this effect for long-running program; in fact, potentially Java can be faster as it can use run-time profiling to guide optimizations.

The %{color:blue}RecordEditor% is a <b>Data-File</b> editor, similar to File-Aid or Net-Cobols Cobol-Editor. It uses a Record-Layout to format the data in the file in to a human readable format. Because it knows the format of Fields, it can format <b>Binary Fields</b> as normal numbers rather than displaying hex equivalent as most hex editors do. The file can be editted in a Table (Spreadsheet like format) or in a single record format with fields going down the page.
The RecordEditor can edit the following formats:
* %{color:blue}CSV% (Comma, Tab, etc delimitered fields) Files for Windows & Unix.
* %{color:blue}Fixed Field Width% data files (both Text and Binary) for Windows, Unix and Z-OS (IBM Mainframe) Operating systems.
Record-Layout's can either be entered via the Layout-Editor or imported from Cobol Copybooks.
The RecordEditor is written in java (1.4) so it should run on most Computer Systems.

%{color:blue}re2Jasper% is a addon to the %{color:blue}RecordEditor% package. It uses the %{color:blue}RecordEditor% file interface to provide Jasper DataSource / DataSourceProvider for Fixed Field Position or fixed width Data files.
Using this package you can run Jasper Reports (and design reports using iReports graphical designer) for
* Unix / PC fixed field position (Width) data files (both Text and Binary)
* Native %{color:blue}IBM Mainframe Cobol% Datafiles
This package requires the following be installed first
* Java 1.4
* "iReports":http://ireport.sourceforge.net/ or "Jasper Reports":http://jasperreports.sourceforge.net/
* "RecordEditor":http://record-editor.sourceforge.net/
