Freespire is a free community run version of the commercially oriented [[Linspire]] [[Debian]]-based [[linux distribution]].

Originally, a 3rd party project called Freespire (later SquiggleOS) started a community build of the Linspire sources, which were not available for free binary download.

In response, Linspire started the official Freespire project, which is a community driven build with close ties to Linspire, much as [[Fedora-Core]] has close ties to its commercial counterpart [[RHEL]].

*Freespire however has yet to release any code.*

There are two versions of Freespire planned, one release includes [[license:proprietary|proprietary]] libraries licensed by Linspire such as WMA libraries, and the other release only includes open source components.
